Signaalwoorden en tekststructuur

Signal words: the skeleton of an argument

B2 · Upper intermediate · ≈ 25 min

In a B2-level text, half the work isn't about content, but about signposts. Enerzijds promises a second “on the other hand”. Immers says: an explanation of what has just been said is coming. Kortom means a conclusion follows, and you don't need to reread. In reading comprehension exams, the question is often precisely this: what role does this word play in the text?

Six roles

What the word promises
RoleWordsExample

Immers and namelijk explain what has already been said (“after all”, “you see”), while daardoor and derhalve lead to a consequence. Confusing them means reversing the logic.

Word order: three groups

  • Adverbs (echter, daarentegen, bovendien, kortom, derhalve) take the first position and require inversion: Bovendien zijn de kosten gestegen.
  • Immers and namelijk stand within the sentence and do not change the word order: Hij is immers ziek.
  • Conjunctions (hoewel, terwijl, doordat) introduce a subordinate clause — the verb moves to the end.
  • Echter most often stands in the middle, without commas: De kosten zijn echter gestegen — this is common in reports.

One thought, three intonations

  • Het plan is duur. Toch steunen wij het.

The plan is expensive. Yet we support it.

    Neutral turn.

  • Het plan is weliswaar duur, maar het bespaart op termijn geld.

The plan is admittedly expensive, but it saves money in the long run.

    Concession that promises a counter-argument.

  • Het plan is duur. Desondanks heeft de raad ermee ingestemd.

The plan is expensive. Despite this, the council approved it.

    More formal, often in writing.

  • De kosten stijgen. De opbrengsten daarentegen blijven gelijk.

Costs are rising. Revenues, on the other hand, remain the same.

    Strict contrast between two quantities.

How a paragraph is structured in an exam

Typical argumentative paragraph
LineFunctionSignal word
1thesis—
2first argumentten eerste, om te beginnen
3second argumentdaarnaast, bovendien
4objectionweliswaar, hoewel, sommigen stellen dat
5response to objectiontoch, echter, daar staat tegenover dat
6conclusionkortom, al met al

If the text has row 4 without row 5, the author has agreed with the objection. This is the answer to the question “what is the author's position”.

Common mistakes

✕ Not like this

Bovendien de kosten zijn gestegen.

✓ Correct

Bovendien zijn de kosten gestegen.

Moreover, costs have gone up.

Why: An adverb at the beginning of a sentence requires inversion.

✕ Not like this

Hij komt niet, immers hij is ziek.

✓ Correct

Hij komt niet; hij is immers ziek.

He isn't coming; he's ill, after all.

Why: “Immers” is not a conjunction; it stands within the sentence.

✕ Not like this

Enerzijds is het duur, anderzijds het werkt goed.

✓ Correct

Enerzijds is het duur, anderzijds werkt het goed.

On the one hand it's expensive, on the other it works well.

Why: anderzijds takes first position, so the verb follows it: anderzijds werkt het. And enerzijds is never used without anderzijds.

✕ Not like this

Kortom, ik wil nog drie punten noemen.

✓ Correct

Tot slot wil ik nog drie punten noemen.

Finally, I'd like to mention three more points.

Why: “Kortom” introduces a summary, not new points.
