Oorzaak en gevolg in formele taal

Cause and effect in formal texts

B2 · Upper intermediate · ≈ 23 min

At B1 level, cause is omdat and want. In reports and official decisions, other means appear, and they have a semantic difference: omdat explains a motive (“because we decided so”), doordat explains a mechanism (“because something happened”). omdat almost always works, but doordat for a person's decision is a mistake: it makes the decision sound as if it “just happened”.

in the main clausea person's decisiona result without anyone's will
answer to the question waaromyesmore often waardoor

Practical rule: if the subordinate clause contains a person who decided or feels something, use omdat. If it's about natural forces, technology, or circumstances, doordat is more precise, though omdat isn't wrong here either.

Prepositions: vanwege, door, ten gevolge van

  • door + noun — direct cause: Door de storm lag het treinverkeer stil.
  • vanwege — neutral-formal “due to”: Vanwege de drukte is er een tweede loket.
  • ten gevolge van — formal “as a result of”, often for unpleasant things: ten gevolge van de brand.
  • wegens — dry, in announcements: Wegens ziekte gesloten.
  • als gevolg van — same as ten gevolge van, slightly simpler.

Zodat is ambiguous: zodat we op tijd klaar zijn — purpose, het regende hard, zodat de markt niet doorging — result. The context distinguishes them, not the form.

Common mistakes

✕ Not like this

De weg is glad doordat het heeft vannacht gevroren.

✓ Correct

The road is slippery because it froze last night.

✕ Not like this

Doordat ik geen zin had, ben ik thuisgebleven.

✓ Correct

Omdat ik geen zin had, ben ik thuisgebleven.

Because I didn't feel like it, I stayed at home.

Why: Vanwege is a preposition, followed by a noun.

✕ Not like this

De trein viel uit, daardoor ik kwam te laat.

✓ Correct

De trein viel uit, waardoor ik te laat kwam.

The train was cancelled, which made me late.

Why: Within a sentence — waardoor; daardoor starts a new sentence with inversion.

✕ Not like this

Derhalve uw recht vervalt.

✓ Correct

Derhalve vervalt uw recht.

Consequently, your right lapses.

Why: After an adverb in the first position, inversion is needed.
