What to put first

B2 · Upper intermediate · ≈ 23 min

Word order at B1 is about the “verb second” rule. At B2, the question is different: what exactly to put before the verb. A Dutch sentence is structured like a bridge from the already known to the new: on the left is what we are talking about, on the right is what we are communicating. Those who grasp this will find paragraphs flow naturally; those who don't will write grammatically correct but still clunky sentences.

What can generally be moved to the front

The first position is occupied by one group of words
What is movedExampleWhy
subjectWij steunen dat plan.neutral, nothing emphasised
objectDat plan steunen wij.“this specific plan”, links to previous information
adverbial of timeVolgend jaar verandert de regeling.framework: when
adverbial of placeIn Tilburg merk je daar weinig van.framework: where
prepositional adverbDaarover hebben wij niets gehoord.refers back to the topic
subordinate clauseAls het regent gaat het feest niet door.condition as background

More than one group cannot fit in the first position: Volgend jaar in Tilburg verandert… is already incorrect; you must choose one.

Sentence cohesion

The same paragraph, two orders

  • De gemeente stuurde een brief. Wij hebben op die brief nog niet gereageerd.

The municipality sent a letter. We have not yet responded to this letter.

There is a connection, but it's weak: the new sentence starts with wij.

  • De gemeente stuurde een brief. Op die brief hebben wij nog niet gereageerd.

The municipality sent a letter. To this letter, we have not yet responded.

Known information on the left — the paragraph reads smoothly.

  • Er kwamen veel klachten binnen. Daarvan ging de helft over geluidsoverlast.

Many complaints came in. Half of them were about noise.

  • Het voorstel kost twee ton. Dat bedrag heeft de raad niet.

The proposal costs two hundred thousand euros. The council doesn't have that amount.

Emphasis and contrast

  • Moving something to the front emphasises it: Dit voorstel steunen wij, dat andere niet. — “this one we support, but not that other one”.
  • In speech, intonation does the same thing; in writing, only word order does.
  • For strong contrast, use the pair wel … niet: Het geld is er wel, de tijd niet.
  • Don't put new information at the beginning of a sentence: it sounds like an abrupt thought.

Common mistakes

A mistake or not how it's done

Volgend jaar de regeling verandert.

✓ The right way

Volgend jaar verandert de regeling.

Next year the rule changes.

Why: After an initial adverbial phrase, the verb must come second.

A mistake or not how it's done

Volgend jaar in Tilburg verandert de regeling.

✓ The right way

Volgend jaar verandert de regeling in Tilburg.

Next year the rule changes in Tilburg.

Why: Only one group of words can be placed at the beginning of a sentence.

A mistake or not how it's done

Daarover wij hebben niets gehoord.

✓ The right way

Daarover hebben wij niets gehoord.

We haven't heard anything about that.

Why: Inversion is also mandatory after adverbs with daar-.

A mistake or not how it's done

Een nieuwe collega hebben wij aangenomen, hij begint maandag.

✓ The right way

Wij hebben een nieuwe collega aangenomen. Hij begint maandag.

We've hired a new colleague. He starts on Monday.

Why: Don't put new information at the beginning of a sentence: it should come at the end.
