About

nl-learn.nl is a free self-study course in Dutch for people who live in the Netherlands: to understand and speak Dutch in the shop, at the doctor's, at work, in letters from the gemeente and in the exam.

Who makes this site

My name is Dmitrij and I live in the Netherlands. The site grew out of what I was missing myself: clear explanations of the rules, real examples from everyday life, and exercises that don't just say “wrong” but explain why.

What you'll find here

  • Five levels — A1, A2, B1, B2 and C1 — on the CEFR scale that the NT2 and inburgering exams are based on.
  • At every level: grammar, vocabulary, reading, listening, practice tests and a mock exam.
  • 259 lessons and more than 6,000 exercises that check your answer and explain every mistake.
  • Recorded dialogues for listening practice and the mock exams.
  • Explanations in three languages: English, Russian and Ukrainian.
  • A list of textbooks and official practice exams for anyone preparing for NT2.

How the lessons are made

Each level follows the CEFR descriptors and the topics of the NT2 and inburgering exams: from introducing yourself and shopping at A1 to letters to the gemeente, negotiations and newspaper texts at B2–C1.

The lesson texts are drafted with the help of AI tools and then checked line by line: rules, examples, translations and exercise answers are compared against the Dutch text. In September 2026 the whole A1–C1 course went through this check, and several thousand places were corrected — from inaccurate rules to exercises where two answers were possible.

Every exercise has a “Something wrong here?” button. I read the reports myself and fix the lessons in all three languages at once.

Why it's free

The site is free and needs no account: your progress is stored in your browser. Hosting, audio and illustrations are paid for by advertising and by affiliate links to online tutors; those links are marked. More about data in the privacy policy.
