Concessie en relativering

Agreeing, but still objecting

B2 · Upper intermediate · ≈ 24 min

An argument in Dutch is rarely structured as “no, you’re wrong”. The usual pattern is different: first acknowledge the validity of part of the argument, then elaborate. Het klopt dat het duur is, maar… In meetings and exams, this is valued more highly than a direct denial: the other person sees that they have been heard.

Concessive conjunctions

How each word structures the sentence
WordHow it affects word orderExample
hoewelconjunction: verb at the end of the subordinate clauseHoewel het duur is, doen we het.
ook alconjunction, more colloquial; the verb comes straight after ook al, and the main clause after it often has no inversionOok al is het duur, we doen het.
weliswaaradverb within the sentence, almost always followed by maarHet is weliswaar duur, maar het werkt.
tochadverb: turning point after a concessionHet is duur. Toch doen we het.
desondanks / nietteminadverb in first position, inversionDesondanks gaat het project door.
ondankspreposition: followed by a nounOndanks de kosten gaat het door.

Ondanks is a preposition, hoewel is a conjunction. This leads to a common mistake: ondanks het duur is instead of hoewel het duur is or ondanks de kosten.

Softening: how not to sound harsh

  • enigszins, ietwat, tamelijk — “somewhat, rather”: Het voorstel is enigszins optimistisch.
  • op zich, in principe — “in itself, in principle”: an acknowledgement with a reservation.
  • niet helemaal, niet zonder meer — a polite “not entirely”: Daar ben ik het niet helemaal mee eens.
  • lijkt / schijnt / zou kunnen — removes certainty: Dat lijkt me lastig.
  • even and misschien in a request: Kunt u dat misschien even nakijken?

One objection, three degrees of harshness

  • Dat klopt niet.

    That is incorrect.

Direct; would sound harsh in a meeting.

  • Dat klopt niet helemaal, geloof ik.

    I don't think that's entirely correct.

Doubly softened: niet helemaal + geloof ik.

  • Op zich klopt dat, maar de cijfers van vorig jaar laten iets anders zien.

In principle that's true, but last year's figures tell a different story.

Concession plus argument — the most effective option.

  • Ik begrijp het punt, maar ik zou er toch anders naar kijken.

I understand the point, but I would still look at it differently.

Dat neemt niet weg dat — the most useful formula in this lesson: it allows you to agree and immediately continue with your own point of view, without devaluing the other person.

Common mistakes

✕ Not like this

Ondanks het duur is, doen we het.

✓ Correct

Hoewel het duur is, doen we het.

Although it's expensive, we'll do it.

Why: Ondanks is a preposition, followed by a noun.

✕ Not like this

Het is weliswaar duur, dus we doen het.

✓ Correct

Het is weliswaar duur, maar we doen het.

It's expensive, admittedly, but we'll do it.

Why: weliswaar concedes a point, so what follows is a contrast with maar, not a conclusion with dus.

✕ Not like this

Hoewel het duur is, maar we doen het.

✓ Correct

Hoewel het duur is, doen we het.

Although it's expensive, we'll do it.

Why: There is already a conjunction — a second one is redundant.

✕ Not like this

Desondanks het project gaat door.

✓ Correct

Desondanks gaat het project door.

Nevertheless, the project is going ahead.

Why: After an adverb at the beginning of the sentence — inversion.

✕ Not like this

Ik ben het niet helemaal eens, maar dat klopt niet.

✓ Correct

Op zich klopt dat, maar ik zie het anders.

In itself that's true, but I see it differently.

Why: Softening and sharp refusal in one phrase contradict each other.
