Nuance en gradatie

Nuance and degree: enigszins, beduidend, allerminst

C1 · Advanced · ≈ 24 min

At B1 level, een beetje, heel and helemaal niet were enough. C1 level means precision: enigszins teleurgesteld and ietwat teleurgesteld sound different, as an adverb, beduidend goes before a comparative, and niet bepaald goedkoop is a polite way of saying “very expensive”. The Dutch love understatement, so you need to hear the scale in reverse too.

Bas begon: 'Het was kort.'

Sanne was overtuigd.

After a new colleague's presentation the manager asked for feedback. Bas began: 'It wasn't exactly short.' Everyone laughed; he meant it was rather long-winded.

Anouk was more positive: 'The analysis was extremely thorough, and the figures were significantly better supported than last year.' Alex thought the conclusion somewhat premature: 'The growth is substantial, but it's only one quarter so far.'

Sanne was not in the least convinced. 'The plan is anything but feasible,' she said. 'I'm by no means against growth, but this budget is by far the highest of all departments.'

The colleague himself stayed pretty calm. 'I'm slightly shaken,' he joked. 'Next time I'll make it considerably shorter.'
