Stylistic errors: find and correct

C1 · Advanced · ≈ 26 min

Hij bekleedt een belangrijke rol. Wij hebben uw brief ontvangen en wordt binnen twee weken beantwoord. Every word here is Dutch, the grammar is almost correct — yet a native speaker stumbles. These are not errors of form, but of assembly: two phrases are glued into one, the subject is lost along the way, the same thing is said twice. At C1 level, such errors are almost absent in individual words, but they remain in phrases. This lesson teaches you to notice them — primarily in your own texts.

Contamination

Two correct phrases — one incorrect
ErrorCorrectWhat it's made from
een rol bekledeneen rol spelen / een functie bekledenspelen + bekleden
dat maakt geen verschil uitdat maakt geen verschil / dat maakt niet uittwo ways to say “it doesn't matter”
mijn inziensmijns inziensmijns inziens + naar mijn inzien
een hekel van iets hebbeneen hekel hebben aanunder the influence of een afkeer van

Contamination comes from memory: both phrases are familiar, and in a hurry the mind takes half of each. There is one cure — checking fixed expressions in a dictionary, especially verbs and prepositions.

Pleonasm and tautology

The same thing — twice
SuperfluousSufficientWhy
een nieuwe innovatieeen innovatiean innovation is always new
een gratis cadeaueen cadeaua gift is already free
zoals bijvoorbeeldzoals / bijvoorbeeldboth words introduce an example
reeds alal / reedssynonyms
moeten verplichtmoeten / verplicht zijnobligation twice
terugkeren naar huis terugterugkeren naar huisterug is already in the verb
maar echtermaar / echtertwo conjunctions of contrast
bijna nagenoegbijna / nagenoegsynonyms

Pleonasm is a modifier whose meaning is already contained in the word (witte sneeuw). Tautology is two words with the same meaning side by side (enkel en alleen). Sometimes repetition is deliberate and serves an emotional purpose — enkel en alleen is exactly such a case. It is an error when it is accidental.

Double conjunction and anacoluthon

One connection — one connecting word

✕ Not like this

Hoewel het plan goed is, maar het is te duur.

✓ Correct

Hoewel het plan goed is, is het te duur. / Het plan is goed, maar te duur.

Although the plan is good, it's too expensive.

Why: hoewel and maar express the same concession.

✕ Not like this

Omdat de trein uitviel, daarom kwam ik te laat.

✓ Correct

Omdat de trein uitviel, kwam ik te laat.

Because the train was cancelled, I was late.

Why: omdat already states the reason; daarom repeats it.

✕ Not like this

Wat ik wil zeggen is dat de regels, die zijn veel te streng.

✓ Correct

Wat ik wil zeggen, is dat de regels veel te streng zijn.

What I want to say is that the rules are far too strict.

Why: Anacoluthon: the phrase starts as a subordinate clause and ends as a main clause.

Incorrect ellipsis

  • Two sentences can be shortened by omitting the subject: De gemeente keurt het plan goed en voert het volgend jaar uit. — both actions are performed by de gemeente.
  • You cannot omit the subject if it changes: Wij hebben uw brief ontvangen en wordt binnen twee weken beantwoord — “we” received it, but the letter will be answered.
  • The same applies to verb form: Ik heb het formulier ingevuld en stuurt het naar de gemeente — after ik, it should be stuur.
  • Check: mentally restore the omitted subject. If you get something like wij wordt beantwoord — the ellipsis is incorrect.

Corrections from business letters

  • Uw aanvraag is ontvangen en wordt binnen vier weken behandeld.

Your application has been received and will be processed within four weeks.

Correct: both predicates refer to aanvraag.

  • Wij hebben uw aanvraag ontvangen; die wordt binnen vier weken behandeld.

We have received your application; it will be processed within four weeks.

The subject changes — a new pronoun is needed.

The board discussed the proposal and approves it.
