Ellips en samentrekking

Ellipsis: when you don't need to repeat

C1 · Advanced · ≈ 22 min

Good writing doesn't repeat unnecessarily: Ik sta op en ga naar mijn werk, Jan gaat naar Rome en Piet naar Parijs, de voor- en nadelen. But ellipsis only works when the omitted word is exactly the same in both parts — in form and in function. If you break this rule, you end up with Ik heb gewerkt en daarna naar huis gegaan or Hij nam de trein en afscheid van zijn moeder. This lesson is about the line between conciseness and error.

What can be omitted

Types of ellipsis
What is omittedExampleCondition
subjectZe pakt haar tas en fietst naar school.same person in both parts
verbMijn broer neemt de trein en mijn zus de bus.same form: neemt / neemt
objectHij koopt en verkoopt tweedehands fietsen.both verbs require the same object
verb in a subordinate clause…omdat hij werkt en zij studeert.each part has its own verb at the end — that's fine
part of a compound wordvoor- en nadelen, in- en uitganghyphen instead of the omitted part

In formal written text, it's safest to omit a verb only if the form matches exactly: Ik neem de trein en jij de bus (neem / neemt) sounds fine in conversation, but in an official text, it's better to repeat the verb.

When ellipsis is an error

The omitted part must match

✕ Not like this

Ik heb de hele dag gewerkt en daarna naar huis gegaan.

✓ Correct

Ik heb de hele dag gewerkt en ben daarna naar huis gegaan.

I worked all day and then went home.

Why: gewerkt requires hebben, gegaan requires zijn. You can't use one auxiliary verb for both.

✕ Not like this

Hij nam de trein en afscheid van zijn moeder.

✓ Correct

Hij nam afscheid van zijn moeder en stapte in de trein.

He said goodbye to his mother and got on the train.

Why: Zeugma: nemen in two different meanings. Only acceptable as a joke.

✕ Not like this

Het museum is gesloten en de medewerkers met vakantie.

✓ Correct

Het museum is gesloten en de medewerkers zijn met vakantie.

The museum is closed and the staff are on holiday.

Why: zijn is omitted, but the first part has is — the forms are different.

✕ Not like this

De hond zag de kat en rende weg.(if it was the cat that ran away)

✓ Correct

De hond zag de kat, die wegrende. / De hond zag de kat en de kat rende weg.

The dog saw the cat, which ran away.

Why: If the cat ran away, the omitted subject doesn't match hond.

The ellipsis hyphen

  • The common part of compound words is written once, with a hyphen in place of the omitted part: land- en tuinbouw, zomer- en wintertijd.
  • This also works with the end of a word: tuinbouw en -architectuur — a rare but correct option.
  • A hyphen is not needed if the words are not compound: groot en klein, not groot- en klein.
  • Adjectives ending in -talig, -vormig, etc.: Nederlands- en Engelstalige teksten.
