Voorzichtig formuleren

Cautious or confident: het lijkt erop dat…

C1 · Advanced · ≈ 24 min

Dit bewijst dat thuiswerken productiever is — this is a strong statement, and a reviewer will tear it apart if the study only showed correlation. De resultaten wijzen erop dat… — this says the same thing, but honestly. At C1 level, it's important not only what you state, but also how confidently: a scientific article, a memo, and an expert opinion rely on precise dosage. This lesson provides a scale and teaches you not to overdo it in either direction.

Scale of certainty

From confident to cautious
  • Certainty

    established

    Wording

Vast staat dat … / Uit het onderzoek blijkt dat …

    When

    there is direct evidence

  • Certainty

    very likely

    Wording

Het is aannemelijk dat … / Waarschijnlijk …

    When

    evidence is strong, but indirect

  • Certainty

    there are indications

    Wording

Het lijkt erop dat … / De cijfers wijzen erop dat …

    When

    data points in one direction

  • Certainty

    assumption

    Wording

Vermoedelijk … / Dit doet vermoeden dat …

    When

    conclusion from observations

  • Certainty

    possible

    Wording

    Mogelijk … / Wellicht … / Het is denkbaar dat …

    When

    hypothesis

  • Certainty

    cannot be ruled out

    Wording

Het valt niet uit te sluiten dat …

    When

    unlikely, but possible

  • Certainty

    unlikely

    Wording

Het is onwaarschijnlijk dat … / Er zijn geen aanwijzingen dat …

    When

    data against it

Er zijn geen aanwijzingen dat… is not the same as “it doesn't exist”: it means “we found no signs”. The difference is important in expert opinions and in the press.

blijken, lijken, schijnen

Three “seems” with different bases
VerbBasisExample
blijken (te)checked, turned outHij blijkt al jaren ziek te zijn. — It turns out he has been ill for years.
lijken (te)gives the impressionHij lijkt ziek. — He looks ill.
schijnen (te)they say, according to rumourHij schijnt ziek te zijn. — They say he is ill.

Blijken is the strongest of the three: it's based on fact. Schijnen is the weakest: it's based on hearsay. In a report on verified data, you write blijkt, whereas schijnt would sound unprofessional.

Academic phrases

    Standard disclaimer for correlation.

  • In zekere mate bevestigen de resultaten de hypothese.

To a certain extent, the results confirm the hypothesis.

Neither too much nor too little

Two opposing errors

✕ Not like this

Dit onderzoek bewijst dat thuiswerken productiever is.

✓ Correct

Dit onderzoek wijst erop dat thuiswerken productiever is.

This study suggests that working from home is more productive.

Why: Correlation is not proof — bewijzen is too strong.

✕ Not like this

Het lijkt mogelijk dat het wellicht waarschijnlijk is dat de kosten stijgen.

✓ Correct

Waarschijnlijk stijgen de kosten.

Costs will probably go up.

Why: Three caution markers in a row — the text loses meaning.

✕ Not like this

Hij schijnt volgens de meting ziek te zijn.

✓ Correct

Uit de meting blijkt dat hij ziek is.

The measurement shows that he is ill.

Why: If the basis is a measurement, blijken is needed, not a rumour.
