Diplomatiek formuleren

C1 · Advanced · ≈ 23 min

The Dutch are considered direct, and within a team this is true: Dat werkt niet is a normal thing to say. But in a meeting with a partner, in a letter to a client or in a conversation with management, the same thought needs different packaging: Ik heb daar mijn bedenkingen bij — I have my reservations about that, Daar kan ik op dit moment helaas niet in meegaan — unfortunately, I can't go along with that at the moment. The content stays direct — the form changes. This lesson gives you a set of such forms and explains when you need them.

Softeners

One thought — different packaging

That plan won't work. → I wonder whether that plan will work in practice.

A question instead of a verdict.

It's too expensive. → For us, it's a bit on the expensive side right now.

aan de dure kant — polite for “expensive”.

  • U heeft het mis. → Volgens mij ligt het iets genuanceerder.

    You're wrong. → I think it's a bit more nuanced than that.

  • Nee.

    No. → Unfortunately, that won't work, but I can…

    Refusal + alternative.

Do it differently. → How do you feel about approaching this differently?

When to be direct, when to be diplomatic

Too little and too much

✕ Not like this

Dat is een slecht plan.

✓ Correct

I have my reservations about this plan, especially regarding the costs.

Why: Doubt with a reason instead of an evaluation.

✕ Not like this

I'd like to suggest doing it differently.

Why: Four softeners — the position disappears.

✕ Not like this

Nee, dat kan niet.

✓ Correct

Unfortunately I can't promise that, but I can look into an alternative.

Why: Refusal with an alternative maintains the relationship.
