Economie in het nieuws

Economics in the news: koopkracht, inflatie, begroting

C1 · Advanced · ≈ 27 min

Every September, on Prinsjesdag, the government presents the budget, and for a week the news only talks about koopkracht, lastenverlichting and begrotingstekort. The economics section of NOS and NRC is a good test for C1 level: the words are short, but the meaning lies in the details. “The rate increased by 1 percent” and “by 1 percentage point” are different news stories. This lesson covers both the words and these details.

On Prinsjesdag the cabinet presents the budget for the coming year. The news opens with purchasing power: will households be better off or not?

According to the calculations, purchasing power will rise by 0.8 per cent on average. Inflation is expected to come out at 2.5 per cent, and wages will rise slightly faster. Working people get a tax cut.

At the same time the budget deficit rises to 2.9 per cent of GDP, just below the European limit. To stop the national debt growing further, the cabinet wants to cut back on subsidies.

Unemployment is low and the labour market remains tight. Economists do warn: if the world economy shrinks, a recession looms. The opposition wants to halve child poverty and calls the plan too cautious.

Gesprek — Na Prinsjesdag

Alex and his neighbour Henk, a pensioner, are discussing budget news at the gate.

  1. Henk

Heb je het gezien? Wij gepensioneerden gaan er weer op achteruit.

Have you seen it? We pensioners are going to be worse off again.

  2. Alex

Maar de AOW stijgt toch mee met de lonen?

But the state pension rises in line with wages, doesn't it?

  3. Henk

Dat wel, maar de zorgpremie en de energie stijgen harder. Netto hou ik minder over.

It does, but the health insurance premium and energy are rising faster. Net, I'm left with less.

  4. Alex

Voor werkenden is er juist lastenverlichting.

For people in work, on the other hand, the tax burden is going down.

  5. Henk

Precies. En het tekort betalen onze kleinkinderen later.

Exactly. And our grandchildren will pay for the deficit later.
