Even if you are an employee, you will encounter these words: on a repair bill, in the news about the VAT rate, or in a conversation with an accountant. Here are the essential ones you need to understand an invoice or a tax letter.

Bas has worked as a freelancer for a year: he's a painter. He registered with the Chamber of Commerce and started a sole proprietorship.

Alex and Nora ask him for a quote for the outside of their house: 2,400 euros, excluding VAT. During the work it turns out the wood is rotten. That's extra work, so Bas first discusses it with his client: Alex.

Afterwards Bas sends an invoice with a payment term of thirty days. Not all clients pay on time: sometimes he has to send a reminder, or even a final demand.

His turnover in the first year was 60,000 euros, but the profit is much lower: he made a big investment in a van and materials. Because of inflation, paint and ladders have also become more expensive. 'At least I'm not going bankrupt,' he laughs.

The difference between herinnering and aanmaning is significant: after the second, additional costs are charged, and then the case goes to an incassobureau “debt collection agency”.

A zzp'er (freelancer) doesn't have an employer, but opdrachtgevers (clients). This also means different rights: no holiday pay, no sick pay, but tax deductions.
