Teacher talk: differentiëren, leerlijn, intern begeleider

At a parent-teacher conference, a B1 level is sufficient. But start working in a school — as an assistant, teacher, or intern after pabo — and a different language emerges: verlengde instructie, leerlingvolgsysteem, IB'er, OPP. These are the words used in staff meetings and written in student reports. This lesson covers them across three topics: the lesson, student monitoring, and support.

Juf Esther is the teacher of group 6. She starts every lesson with the learning goal on the board. Then she gives a short explanation; anyone who already gets it works independently.

A small group of children gets extended instruction at the instruction table. That's how she differentiates: not every child learns at the same pace.

After the textbook test she checks the pupil tracking system. Mila is making good progress in maths, but her reading comprehension has stalled. Esther talks it over with the special needs coordinator.

Together they draw up an action plan: extra reading support twice a week. That way Mila can catch up. Thanks to inclusive education there's also money for it, through the regional partnership of schools.

How it sounds in the staffroom

Bij rekenen differentieer ik in drie niveaus.
In maths, I differentiate at three levels.
