You sign a contract once, but you read its clauses for years: how many holiday days, what ketenregeling means, when your proeftijd ends. These words are rarely used in conversation, but they appear in every letter from your employer and every job advertisement.

Sanne has worked at a logistics company for three years, always on a temporary contract. Under the chain rule she is entitled to a permanent contract after three years. But her employer is stalling.

Her colleague Bas has a zero-hours contract: he never knows how many hours he'll work next week. 'Under the collective agreement they have to offer me a fixed number of hours after a year,' he says.

Then comes the news: the company is reorganising. Twenty people are made redundant. Anyone who is dismissed gets a transition payment and can then apply for unemployment benefit.

Sanne is offered a settlement agreement: she can leave by mutual consent. First she has a lawyer check it. In the end she doesn't resign, and she gets her permanent contract after all, with a higher gross salary.

Job advertisements almost always state conform cao — this means the salary is determined by the industry agreement, not the employer, so there is little to negotiate beyond the step within the scale.
