Culture and criticism: recensie, vertolking, oeuvre

C1 · Advanced · ≈ 25 min

A review in de Volkskrant or NRC rarely says “the play is good”: instead you'll read een ingetogen vertolking (a restrained performance) or een gelaagde voorstelling (a multi-layered production). A failure is het stuk komt niet uit de verf (the play doesn't come into its own). You need this language to choose what to see tonight, to join a conversation after an exhibition, and to understand why a play got two stars out of five. This lesson covers the stage, the visual arts and the language of criticism.

Show translation (try it without first)

Last week a new production premiered in Arnhem: an adaptation of an old Dutch novel. Alex and Nora had tickets.

The direction was daring: the set consisted only of an empty hall with twenty chairs. The performance in the lead role was restrained and precisely for that reason gripping. At the end there was a standing ovation.

The next day they read two reviews. One was glowing: 'A layered piece, highly recommended.' The other was scathing: 'The concept doesn't come off, and the second half drags.'

At the weekend they visited an exhibition about a forgotten woman painter. Almost her entire body of work was on show, including a canvas on loan from a museum in Vienna. The curator gave the tour himself.

A Dutch speciality is cabaret: a solo show combining humour with politics and melancholy. On New Year’s Eve, millions watch the oudejaarsconference — a year-end cabaret review — on TV.

Niet uit de verf komen — from painting: the paint didn't take, the idea didn't come through. Het talent van de actrice komt in deze rol niet uit de verf — the actress could do better, but the role didn't allow it.

How it sounds

  • De voorstelling ging gisteren in première in de Stadsschouwburg.

The performance premiered at the Stadsschouwburg yesterday.

Her restrained portrayal of the mother carries the whole play.

The retrospective shows the painter's complete body of work.

The idea is bold, but it doesn't come into its own in the execution.

Despite a somewhat long-winded start, this one comes recommended.

Gesprek — In de foyer

Janine and Alex discuss the first part of the play during the interval.

  1. Janine

The review in the paper was scathing, but I actually find it quite gripping.

  2. Alex

The set is beautiful. It's just the lead actor I find a bit over the top.

  3. Janine

That's what the reviewer said too: his talent doesn't come into its own in this role.

  4. Alex

But the actress who plays the daughter — what a restrained performance.

  5. Janine

She carries the show. For her alone it's worth seeing.
