Verjaardagsgesprek vol ironie

Birthday: a conversation that’s half irony

C1 · Advanced · ≈ 26 min

A Dutch birthday is a kringverjaardag: chairs in a circle, coffee, cake and conversation about everything at once. It's harder to follow than a lecture: the jokes are built on understatement, exaggeration and innocent-sounding questions with a catch. Almost nobody says what they literally mean — and yet it isn't an argument, but a way of showing attention.

  • Question 1: What do the guests congratulate each other on, besides the birthday girl?
  • Question 2: What does Henk's praise for Daan's shed really mean?
  • Question 3: What is Janine really proud of when she complains?
  • Question 4: How does Daan respond to the jab about the car?
  • Question 5: Which phrase in this conversation is said seriously?

How a jab sounds

What is said and what is meant
PhraseLiterallyActually
Heel knap. Staat hij nog?well done; is it still standing?doubt about the quality of the construction, a friendly jab
Scheef, maar hij staat.crooked, but standingaccepts the joke and laughs at himself
Zelfs de stoelen staan in een kring, zoals het hoort.even the chairs are in a circle, as they should begentle irony about the custom itself
Het stelt niks voor, hoor.nothing specialhidden pride: her daughter came first
Niks voorstellen, ja ja.nothing special, sure“don't be so modest”
Die past net niet in de straat.it just doesn't fit in the street“the car is too big, don't show off”
Eén keer. Eén keer!just once!lost an argument and admits it with a laugh

The rule of Dutch teasing: it is directed at an action or thing, not at a person, and ends with both parties laughing. If the other person doesn't laugh, the joke is dropped — like Nora: Jongens. Taart.

Birthday customs

  • Gefeliciteerd met je vrouw / je zoon — congratulations are extended not only to the birthday person but also to all their close relatives. To a foreigner, this sounds strange; to a Dutch person, it's obvious.
  • De kring — chairs in a circle, everyone sees everyone, the conversation is general. Dutch people themselves joke about this custom.
  • Koffie eerst, dan taart — coffee first, then cake, and usually “one serving” until more is offered.
  • Op tijd komen en op tijd gaan — arrive on time and leave when the conversation dies down.
  • Even serieus — a signal that the jokes are over and something important is about to be asked.
