Science news is a genre of its own: Onderzoekers van de TU Delft hebben een doorbraak geboekt, Volgens de nieuwste klimaatscenario's van het KNMI…, Het taalmodel hallucineert. The words here are international, but with Dutch grammar and specific collocations: een doorbraak boeken, een hypothese weerleggen, een model trainen op data. This lesson covers three areas that are most frequently reported on, and the language of the news itself.

Researchers at TU Delft have achieved a breakthrough: a new climate model predicts sea level rise along the Dutch coast more accurately. They published their work in an international journal.

In the most favourable scenario the sea will rise sixty centimetres this century, but the margin of uncertainty is large. Other teams still have to reproduce the results.

For the calculations they used artificial intelligence. A language model helped search through thousands of articles. But they checked everything, because such a model can hallucinate. It has been trained on existing texts, with all the bias that entails.

In the same paper: a clinical trial of a new migraine drug. In half of the test subjects the pain largely disappeared, so the efficacy seems high. Still, the technique is in its infancy.
