Onderhandelen en polderen

Negotiating and the polder model: compromis, concessie, water bij de wijn

C1 · Advanced · ≈ 26 min

The Dutch are constantly negotiating: about salaries, about a fence with a neighbour, about a coalition after elections. There's a verb for it: polderen — to seek a compromise until everyone agrees. This lesson covers negotiation vocabulary from the first bod to the akkoord, phrases that help you make concessions without losing face, and a bit of history about why this country loves to sit around a table.

At Alex's company the collective bargaining is under way. On one side of the table sits the union, on the other the employers. The union takes a clear position: a five per cent pay rise.

The employers make an offer of two per cent. The union responds with a counter-offer of four per cent. Then the talks get stuck: for a week everything is at an impasse.

Then the polder model kicks in. The employers meet the union halfway with an extra day off. The union waters down its demands and lets go of the five per cent, although its lower limit is three per cent.

After a long night they reach an agreement: 3.5 per cent and an extra day off, subject to approval. The union still has to put it to its members. 'Typically Dutch,' says Alex. 'In the end they always work it out together.'

The word comes from the polders: land below sea level where, for centuries, dikes had to be maintained together — even by neighbours who were at odds. The symbol of the model is the Akkoord van Wassenaar (1982): the trade unions agreed to moderate wage growth, and the employers to shorter working hours.

Gesprek — Over het salaris

Alex has received a job offer and is discussing the terms with the HR manager.

  1. Sanne

We bieden je 3.900 euro bruto per maand. Wat vind je daarvan?

We're offering you 3,900 euros gross a month. What do you think?

  2. Alex

Dank je. Op basis van mijn ervaring had ik eerder aan 4.400 gedacht.

Thank you. Based on my experience, I'd been thinking more of 4,400.

  3. Sanne

Dat valt buiten onze schaal. Ik kan naar 4.100 gaan.

That's outside our scale. I can go to 4,100.

  4. Alex

Als jullie me tegemoetkomen met een thuiswerkdag en de reiskosten, kan ik met 4.100 leven.

If you meet me halfway with a work-from-home day and travel expenses, I can live with 4,100.

  5. Sanne

Dat moet ik even voorleggen, maar ik denk dat we eruit komen.

I'll have to run that past someone, but I think we'll work it out.

  6. Alex

Mooi. Zullen we het zo afspreken, onder voorbehoud van akkoord?

Excellent. Shall we agree on this, subject to approval?
