The Dutch education system is not structured like in most countries: mbo, hbo, wo are not levels of quality, but different types of education. On top of that, there are words without which you won't be able to read a letter from an educational institution: studiepunten, bindend studieadvies, herkansing. This lesson is about both the system and the words.

Anouk is in the final year of her part-time nursing programme. She already has 210 credits; now she only has to write her thesis.

Her research question: why do older patients fall more often in hospital than at home? She runs a survey among sixty nurses. Her supervisor warns: 'Your sample is small. Be careful with firm conclusions.'

The results show a clear link between falls and new medication. But is that also the cause? That's an assumption she still has to support.

She carefully references every source: the programme checks all theses for plagiarism. She got an exemption for one subject, because she had already passed it in Portugal. She pays the tuition fees herself, alongside her job.

DUO is the organisation that deals with student money and diplomas. A letter from DUO is almost always about money or diploma recognition.

The difference between verband and oorzaak is a standard question on reading exams: the text shows a connection, and the reader mistakenly infers a cause.
