Meetings and collaboration

B2 · Upper intermediate · ≈ 25 min

Dutch meetings are predictably structured: agenda, discussion, decisions, action points. More than half the words are repeated from meeting to meeting, and knowing a dozen phrases (“ik wil daar iets aan toevoegen”, “laten we dat parkeren”) changes the feeling of work more than another hundred nouns.

On Tuesday there's the team meeting. Alex is chairing. He sent round the agenda in advance, with four items. Sanne takes the minutes.

The first item is the progress of the new project. The deadline is at risk, because the client is slow to respond. 'Should we escalate this?' asks Bas. 'First I'll coordinate it with the project leader,' says Alex.

They've been talking about the new schedule for weeks. Now they really have to make a decision. Alex first builds support: everyone can give their opinion. Then they decide.

At the end comes any other business. Anouk asks whether someone would read through her presentation. Sanne lists the action points: Bas takes on the planning, Alex reports back to management. They schedule a follow-up meeting in two weeks.
