Lecture excerpt

B2 · Upper intermediate · ≈ 22 min

Listening to a lecture is different from a conversation: there's no one to talk to, you can't ask questions, but there is structure. The lecturer almost always says aloud what's coming next: ik behandel drie punten (“I'll cover three points”), daar kom ik zo op terug (“I'll come back to that later”), kort samengevat (“in short”). You can use these words to structure your notes.

  • Question 1: How many points does the lecturer announce, and what are they?
  • Question 2: What common mistake does the lecturer discuss?
  • Question 3: What example does the lecturer give about the waiting time at the clinic?
  • Question 4: What does the lecturer advise doing when reading statistics?

Structure signals

What the lecturer's phrase means
PhraseWhat the listener should do
Ik behandel drie puntenwrite down three headings, leave space
Ten eerste / Ten tweedenew point, start a new line
Een voorbeeldillustration follows, can be brief
Dat brengt me bijtransition to the next point
Een veelgemaakte foutthis will be on the exam
Daar kom ik op terugnot discussed now, wait for next lecture
Kort samengevatready conclusion, write down verbatim

The phrase het gaat om hoofdstuk vier, niet om het hele boek (“it's about chapter four, not the whole book”) is also a signal, but an organisational one. Missing such clarifications at the end of a lecture is the most costly mistake.
