Abstract words and connections

B2 · Upper intermediate · ≈ 26 min

This is the last vocabulary lesson of the level, focusing on words that don't have a direct image: aanleiding, tendens, omvang, kwestie. These are the words that form the framework of any report or article. They are difficult to learn from a list, but easy to learn in pairs and in contexts where they are repeated.

The number of cycling accidents among older people has risen sharply over the past ten years. According to researchers there is a clear link with the rise of the e-bike. The increase is greatest among people over 75.

What is the cause? E-bikes go faster, and older people react more slowly. The direct reason for the study was a series of serious accidents in Gelderland. The consequence is not only personal suffering, but also higher healthcare costs.

The scale of the problem is large: over-65s make up more than half of fatal cycling accidents. An important bottleneck is the design of cycle paths: narrow paths and high kerbs.

Municipalities are looking for an approach. One possible measure is free cycling training for older people. Its effect remains to be seen. A condition for success, though, is support among older people themselves: without it, no plan will work.

Knelpunt is a favourite word in Dutch reports: not a “problem”, but a specific place where everything gets stuck. It's usually followed by aanpak.

How it sounds in a report

The immediate trigger was a complaint from a resident; the cause lies deeper.

The scale of the deficit has not yet been assessed.

There is a link between waiting time and dropout, but no proof of cause.

The main bottleneck is staffing levels during evening hours.

Gesprek — Een rapport doornemen

Sanne and Mark are preparing the conclusions of the report.

  1. Sanne

What do we call the trigger, and what the cause?

  2. Mark

De aanleiding is de klacht van maart. De oorzaak is de onderbezetting.

The trigger is the March complaint. The cause is understaffing.

  3. Sanne

En de omvang? We hebben alleen cijfers van één afdeling.

And the scale? We only have figures for one department.

  4. Mark

Then we write that the scale is still unknown. No assumptions.

  5. Sanne

There is a clear trend, though: an increase three years in a row.

  6. Mark

Call it a trend, not proof of causation.

  7. Sanne

Akkoord.

Agreed. And shall we put the bottleneck at the top of the recommendations?

  8. Mark

Yes, on condition that a budget becomes available. Otherwise, the measure won't have an effect.
