Samenleving en meedoen

Society and participation

B1 · Intermediate · ≈ 26 min

Dutch society relies on people who meedoen — participate: helping at school, caring for a neighbour, voting in gemeenteraad — municipal council elections. These words are expected in the KNM exam, but they are much more common in everyday life — in a letter from the gemeente, in a neighbourhood chat, in a conversation at school.

Nora wanted to get more involved in the neighbourhood. Through the volunteer centre she found volunteer work at the community centre: every Tuesday she helps out at the language café.

For that she needed a certificate of good conduct, because children come too. She applied for it online. Her neighbour Marjolein is a carer: she looks after her sick father every day. Sometimes Nora does the shopping for her.

In March there were elections for the municipal council. Nora was allowed to vote for the first time. She got a polling card through the letterbox and went with her passport to the polling station in the school.

On the course they talked about the Constitution. Article 1 is about equal treatment. 'Everyone has to stick to the same rules,' said the teacher, 'and anyone who experiences discrimination can report it.'
