DigiD, MijnOverheid en online veiligheid

Digital government and security

B1 · Intermediate · ≈ 25 min

Almost everything in the Netherlands is done online: taxes, benefits, doctor's appointments, renewing residence permits. The key to it all is DigiD. And that's precisely why there's so much fraud surrounding it: phishing, spoofing, fake SMS messages. This lesson is about both sides: how to use it and how to avoid falling victim.

Hun buurvrouw had minder geluk.

One Tuesday evening Nora got a text: 'Your DigiD expires today. Click the link and renew immediately.' She was about to click, but Alex looked over her shoulder: 'That's phishing. The government never sends a link like that.'

They checked the sender: an ordinary mobile number. Real messages from the government arrive in the Berichtenbox on MijnOverheid. Nora logged in there herself, with the app and a verification code. There was nothing about DigiD.

Their neighbour was less lucky. Last year she fell for it and gave away her bank details. She was scammed out of 900 euros. She had to block her bank card and report it to the police.

Nora reported the text to the Fraud Helpdesk. Then she sorted out something else: she authorised Alex, so that from now on he can do her tax return. She signed the form digitally.

Machtigen is a useful feature: you can officially authorise another person (for example, a partner or consultant) to file your tax return for you. This is done via DigiD, not by verbal agreement.

How to spot a scam
SignExampleWhat to do
haast — urgency«Betaal binnen 24 uur»don't rush

There is one rule, with no exceptions: banks, tax authorities, and the police will never ask for your password, PIN, or SMS code — neither by phone nor in chat. If you are in doubt, hang up and call them back using the number from their official website.

  1. Alex

Kijk eens: «Uw DigiD verloopt vandaag. Klik hier om te verlengen.»

Look: “Your DigiD expires today. Click here to renew.”

  2. Marjolein

That’s phishing. DigiD doesn’t just expire like that, and they don’t send links via SMS.

  3. Alex

The link looks real: digid-verlengen dot net.

  4. Marjolein

That's exactly how you can tell. The real address is simply digid.nl; anything that looks even slightly different is fake.

  5. Alex

Ik heb er gelukkig niet op geklikt. Moet ik iets doen?

Luckily, I didn’t click. Do I need to do anything?

  6. Marjolein

Delete it and report it. There's a reporting point: you forward the message and that's it.

  7. Alex

En als iemand er wel intrapt?

What if someone does fall for it?

erin trappen — “to fall for it, to be tricked”.

  8. Marjolein

Call the bank immediately and report it to the police. The faster you act, the better your chances of getting your money back.
