How things are done here: communication rules

B1 · Intermediate · ≈ 25 min

You can know the language and still make a faux pas every day: visiting neighbours unannounced, expecting treats, taking offence at a direct question. Here are the unwritten rules that locals consider self-evident, and the words they use to describe them.

1. A colleague's birthday

In his first year Alex was invited to the birthday of his colleague Sanne. They had arranged it three weeks in advance: Sanne immediately got out her diary. Dropping by unannounced isn't done here; many people find it rude to just turn up. 'Don't bring anything expensive,' said Sanne. 'Keep it simple.'

It was a real circle birthday: all the guests sat on chairs in a circle. Everyone congratulated Sanne, but also her mother and her boyfriend. At first Alex was rather surprised by that.

Still, it was very cosy. At half past ten someone said: 'Right, we'll be off, the babysitter is waiting.' At the door Sanne asked: 'Will you say hello to Nora for me?'

A week later they went out for dinner with the team. At the end Sanne asked: 'Shall we split it?' She paid for everything and sent everyone a payment request. They rounded up the tip together: 'Make it a hundred and eighty.'

3. Directness

What sounds normal and what doesn't
Direct and normalToo harshWhy
Ik ben het er niet mee eens.Dat is onzin.an opinion vs. a judgement of the person
Dat werkt bij ons niet zo.Zo doe je dat fout.about the process, not the interlocutor
Kun je dat toelichten?Dat snap ik niet, leg uit.a question instead of a demand
Ik doe het liever anders.Nee, mijn manier is beter.preference instead of hierarchy
Mag ik eerlijk zijn?Eerlijk gezegd deug je niet.warning before criticism

Directness concerns the content, not the tone. A Dutch person will tell you to your face that they disagree, but almost always with volgens mij, ik denk dat or misschien. Without softeners, it sounds aggressive — even here.

Wij gaan er weer eens vandoor is a standard phrase for leaving. The hosts usually say Blijf nog even!, but this is politeness, not a genuine request to stay.

Tikkie is an app for small transfers, which has become a verb: ik tikkie je means “I’ll send you a payment request”. Receiving a Tikkie for €4.50 for coffee is completely normal and not offensive.
