Family life in the Netherlands involves a lot of paperwork: samenwonen — living together or trouwen — getting married, registering a partnership, enrolling a child in kinderopvang — childcare, and in case of divorce, drawing up an ouderschapsplan — parenting plan. This lesson covers the essential vocabulary for dealing with the gemeente or chatting at the school gates.

The neighbours, Thijs and Sanne, have lived together for five years. They have a cohabitation agreement, but now they want to get married. The wedding is next year.

They have a two-year-old son, Daan. Because they weren't married, Thijs had to acknowledge him at the town hall. They regularly take Daan to the child health clinic, and three days a week he goes to childcare. Compulsory education only starts when he's five.

Sometimes Mila babysits Daan. 'Would you babysit on Saturday?' asks Sanne. 'You'll get five euros an hour.' Nice pocket money, Mila thinks.

Alex and Nora often talk about parenting with the neighbours. They think it's important to set boundaries: no phones at the table, bed at eight. 'As parents you have to be on the same page,' says Sanne, 'otherwise the child plays you off against each other.'
