Klachten, garantie en abonnementen

Shopping, complaints and subscriptions

B1 · Intermediate · ≈ 27 min

Your phone broke after three months, the parcel didn't arrive, your subscription renewed automatically — all these issues can be resolved with words: retourneren — to return an item, de garantie — warranty, een klacht indienen — to make a complaint, opzeggen — to cancel. Consumers in the Netherlands have strong rights, but they only work for those who know how to express them — politely, in writing, and with reference to the facts.

Alex ordered a vacuum cleaner online. On delivery he saw that the box was damaged, but the vacuum seemed fine. So he let his cooling-off period run out.

After four months it stopped working. Alex called customer service. 'There's a two-year manufacturer's warranty,' said the employee. 'Do you still have the receipt?' Luckily the order was in his email: that's proof too.

The shop wanted to have the appliance repaired first. That would take six weeks. Alex thought that was too long: you can reasonably expect a new vacuum cleaner to work for more than four months. He filed a complaint.

A week later he got a confirmation: the shop would replace the vacuum cleaner. That same week he discovered that his subscription to a sports app had been renewed automatically. He cancelled it straight away.

For online purchases, there is a legal 14-day bedenktijd: you can return an item without giving a reason. In a physical shop, this right does not exist: an exchange with a receipt is at the discretion of the shop, which is why you ask Kan ik dit ruilen? rather than demand it.

Phrases for a complaint — verbal and written

The product is not working properly.

A common phrase from letters: naar behoren — “as it should”.

hierbij — “hereby”: this is how official statements begin.

Could you please confirm the cancellation in writing?

No, they just stay at home in their box. They suddenly stopped working.

Het doet het niet (meer) — colloquial for “it doesn't work (anymore)”.

  5. Medewerker

Then it's under warranty. We can send them for repair; that will take about three weeks.

Even kijken…

Let me check… Yes, we have one more in stock. I'll exchange them for you straight away.

  8. Nora

Great, thank you. Can I have a confirmation, just in case?

  9. Medewerker

Of course, I'll note it on the new receipt.
