Opinion, agreement and disagreement

B1 · Intermediate · ≈ 26 min

The B1 exam is half about this: expressing and justifying an opinion. But more important than the exam is that without these phrases, you can't have a proper discussion with a colleague or neighbour. The key is softening: not Dat is fout, but Volgens mij zit het net iets anders.

On the language course they discussed the question: should mobile phones be banned at school? 'I agree with that,' Nora began. 'Firstly, children pay more attention. Besides, they play together again at break time.'

Thijs saw it differently. 'Up to a point you're right. But a total ban goes too far for me. Children actually need to learn how to deal with a phone.'

The teacher asked Nora to support her position. She gave an argument from a study: at schools without phones the marks are better. 'There's something in that,' Thijs admitted.

'May I respond to that?' asked Anouk. She wanted to add some nuance: 'For older children it's different.' All in all they didn't reach agreement. In short: a good discussion.

Al met al and kortom are signals that you are summarising. They work very well in an oral exam: the examiner hears the structure, not just a collection of phrases.

Ready-made mini-argument

Firstly, it's cheaper, and moreover it saves time.

On the one hand, I understand the complaints, but on the other hand, something needs to be done.

There's something in that, but I'd still tackle it differently.

Overall, I think the plan is worth the effort.

Take the bus, for example: it only runs twice an hour here.

Dialoog — Discussie over de parkeerplaats

Neighbours are arguing about a municipal plan.

  1. Thijs

Ik vind dat plan niks. Straks kunnen we nergens meer parkeren.

I don't like this plan at all. Soon there will be nowhere to park.

  2. Alex

Volgens mij valt dat mee. Er komen wel plekken bij, alleen verderop.

I don't think it's that bad. Extra spaces are coming, just further along.

  3. Thijs

Verderop is niet hier. Voor iemand met boodschappen is dat lastig.

Further along isn't here. That's awkward for someone carrying shopping.

  4. Alex

There's something in that. On the other hand, the street will be safer for children.

  5. Thijs

That's true, but then they'd have done better to consult the residents.

  6. Alex

Daar ben ik het mee eens. Het draagvlak ontbreekt gewoon.

I agree there. There's just no public support.

  7. Thijs

Precies. En hoe kijk jij naar het geld? Twee ton, hoorde ik.

Exactly. And what about the money? Two hundred thousand, I heard.

twee ton — 200,000 euros, colloquial.

  8. Alex

Honestly, I don't know if that's true. The newspaper said so, but it's not confirmed.

  9. Thijs

Let's leave it at this: we'll both go to the residents' evening.
