Buren, overlast en klachten

Neighbours and complaints

A2 · Elementary · ≈ 22 min

In the Netherlands, neighbourly conflicts are resolved in a specific order: first talk, then write. Here you'll find a vocabulary of common grievances and, more importantly, phrases that allow you to complain without falling out.

Alex and Nora's new neighbours are nice, but they make a lot of noise. Every weekend the music is loud until two in the morning. And Alex and Nora's bedroom is right against their wall.

On Sunday Alex rings the doorbell. 'Can I ask you something? We heard the music until two last night. Could it be a bit quieter?'

The neighbour is startled. 'Oh, sorry! We had people over. I'll turn it down from now on, I promise.'

It helps for a few weeks. Then it starts again. Alex and Nora don't want a row, so first they call the neighbourhood mediation service. If that doesn't help, they can file a complaint with the landlord. They'd rather not call the community police officer.

2. Common reasons for complaints

Waar gaat het meestal over

de geluidsoverlastnoise
de muziek staat hardloud music
de hond blaft de hele dagdog barking all day
de fiets staat in de wegbicycle is in the way
rook / barbecuesmoke, barbecue
verbouwing / gekloprenovations, banging

Night-time quiet is nachtrust. There is no single national law: house rules and local by-laws usually ask for quiet from 10 or 11 PM until 7 AM. Making noise during the day is fine, but neighbours are warned in advance about big renovations, for example with a note, as in the A1 reading lesson.

3. How to complain without falling out

Phrases for polite complaints
ZinTranslationTone
Sorry dat ik het zeg, maar…Sorry to mention it, but…softly
Ik wil je even iets vragen.I want to ask you something.neutral
Zou het iets zachter kunnen?Could you be a bit quieter?politely
We hoorden het gisteren tot laat.Yesterday we heard it until late.fact without accusation
Onze slaapkamer grenst aan jullie muur. Our bedroom is next to your wall.explanation
Is er iets aan te doen? Can something be done about it?invitation to find a solution
I hope you don't mind.softening
Laten we het gewoon even bespreken.Let's just discuss it.neighbourly

Key technique: first the fact, then the consequence for you, then the request. An accusation (“you're always making noise”) almost guarantees the situation will worsen.

4. Apologising yourself

Sorry about the noise yesterday, we had guests.

I hope it didn't bother you.

Please tell me if it's too much.

  • We gaan volgende week verbouwen, dus het wordt even rommelig.

Next week we're renovating, so it'll be a bit noisy and messy.

Hoi Thijs, heb je even?

Hi Thijs, got a minute? I wanted to ask you something, it's nothing serious.

Tuurlijk, kom binnen. Wat is er?

Of course, come in. What's up?

  3. Alex

Oh, I'm sorry! We had guests, we lost track of time.

  5. Alex

Geen probleem, het gebeurt. Zou het na elven iets zachter kunnen?

No worries, it happens. Could you turn it down a bit after eleven?

  6. Thijs

Zeker.

Of course. And please tell me if it happens again, we'll turn it down straight away.

  7. Alex

Fijn.

Great. By the way, next week we're renovating the bathroom, so we'll be disturbing you then.

  8. Thijs

Ha, dan staan we quitte. Zeg maar wanneer, dan weten we het.

Ha, so we'll be even. Let me know when, so we know.
