Sooner or later something breaks: a tap leaks, the heating doesn't work, the sink is clogged. You need to be able to describe the problem and understand who fixes it — you, the landlord, or a tradesperson. This is the most practical A2-level vocabulary.

1. A cold house

It's January and the house is cold: the heating isn't working. The boiler shows a fault. Alex tops up the water, but it doesn't help.

He calls the heating engineer. 'Can someone come round today?' 'Tomorrow between ten and twelve. There is a call-out charge: 45 euros.'

The engineer sees it straight away: 'A part is broken. I have to order it.' Luckily it's still under warranty.

Meanwhile the tap in the bathroom is leaking and the drain is blocked. That's minor maintenance, so Alex has to do it himself. He doesn't call a plumber: with pliers and a bucket he manages too.
