De vereniging is the Dutch way of living together: a football club, tennis, choir, rowing. Families join, pay contributie, and take turns doing bardienst. It's also the best way to practise the language.

Mila wants to play football. On Saturday they go to the club in the village. First she can do a trial session.

She loves it and joins straight away. The membership fee is 150 euros a year, plus a 15-euro registration fee.

Every Wednesday there's training and on Saturday a match. Mila is in a team with ten girls. Their coach is the father of one of the children: a volunteer, like almost everyone at the club.

The parents help out too. Once a month Alex does a bar shift in the clubhouse. And if Mila can't make it, she has to cancel in time.

The difference is simple: a sportschool is a commercial gym where you pay a subscription, while a vereniging is a non-profit club where members help out themselves: they referee, coach, and work behind the bar.
