December is a busy month. On 5 December it's Sinterklaas. At Alex's work the colleagues draw names: everyone buys one present and writes a poem to go with it.

Mila gets a chocolate letter — a big M — and eats pepernoten all evening.

At Christmas there's a tree in the living room. They have a gourmet evening with the neighbours: everyone cooks little pieces of meat at the table. 'Merry Christmas!' they say to each other.

On 31 December, New Year's Eve, they eat oliebollen. At midnight they watch the fireworks and Mila shouts: 'Happy New Year!'

Dialoog — Op kantoor in december

A conversation with a colleague before the holidays.

  1. Sanne

Doen jullie ook aan Sinterklaas thuis?

Do you celebrate Sinterklaas at home too?

  2. Alex

Sinds vorig jaar wel, voor Mila. Ik moest een gedicht schrijven, dat was nog lastig!

Since last year, yes, for Mila's sake. I had to write a poem — it turned out to be quite difficult!

het gedicht / het stukje — humorous poems for a gift.

  3. Sanne

Ha! Op kantoor trekken we lootjes, met een budget van vijftien euro.

Ha! At the office, we draw lots, with a fifteen-euro budget.

  4. Alex

    Leuk. En met kerst?

    Great. And for Christmas?

  5. Sanne

Eerste kerstdag bij mijn ouders, tweede bij mijn schoonouders. We gaan gourmetten.

Christmas Day at my parents', Boxing Day at my in-laws'. We're doing gourmetten (cooking at the table).

  6. Alex

Dat klinkt gezellig. Wij eten thuis onze eigen gerechten, maar met oliebollen op oudejaarsavond.

Sounds cosy. At home we eat our own dishes, but with oliebollen (doughnut balls) on New Year's Eve.

  7. Sanne

    Perfecte combinatie. Fijne feestdagen alvast!

An excellent combination. Happy holidays in advance!

  8. Alex

Jij ook, en een gelukkig nieuwjaar!

You too, and happy New Year!

5. What is expected of you

  • You come to a birthday party with a gift and a card; expensive gifts are not customary.
  • The birthday person treats colleagues to cake at work themselves.
  • On 27 April, wear something orange — that's enough.
  • On 4 May at 8 PM — two minutes of silence; even trains stop.
  • For Sinterklaas at the office, people often lootjes trekken with a spending limit and poems.
  • For the holidays, you wish your neighbours Fijne feestdagen — a short phrase for everything.
