Participial phrases: gezien, gelet op

B2 · Upper intermediate · ≈ 22 min

Omdat we rekening houden met de kosten — seven words. Rekening houdend met de kosten — five, and this is already business language. Such phrases appear at the beginning of a sentence, do not have their own subject, and take it from the main clause. This leads to the main mistake: if the subjects don't match, the phrase becomes meaningless.

✓ Correct

Word order and the comma

  • The participial phrase comes first, so the verb follows: Gezien de kosten is het plan uitgesteld.
  • The comma is optional: it's usually omitted in short phrases, but included in longer ones for readability.
  • The phrase can also come at the end: Wij maken een uitzondering, rekening houdend met uw situatie.
  • A finite verb is not possible within the phrase: gezien dat de kosten hoog zijn — this is not how it's written.
