Naamwoordstijl en nominalisatie

Nominal style: het uitvoeren van

B2 · Upper intermediate · ≈ 26 min

Compare these two sentences: We gaan de weg opnieuw aanleggen and De herinrichting van de weg start in maart. The meaning is the same, but the second one looks like an official letter, while the first is like a conversation with a neighbour. This difference is called nominal style: the action is expressed by a noun, not a verb. At B2 level, you need to be able to do this both ways — understand such texts and write them when necessary.

Two ways to turn a verb into a noun

Infinitive with het and deverbal noun
MethodExampleNuance
het + infinitivehet aanvragen van een vergunningprocess, closer to spoken language; always works
noun ending in -ingde aanvraag, de beoordeling, de uitvoeringresult or official name of a procedure
noun without a suffixhet besluit, de aanpak, het verzoekan existing word, you need to know it
ending in -atie / -tiede organisatie, de renovatiemore common for words of Latin origin

If there is no noun or it sounds unnatural, het + infinitive saves the day: het opnieuw inrichten van de straat is always correct.

The same thing in three ways

  • De gemeente heeft besloten de brug te vervangen.

The municipality has decided to replace the bridge.

Normal verbal style: how people speak.

  • Tot het vervangen van de brug is besloten.

It has been decided to replace the bridge.

    het + infinitive: neutral-written.

  • Tot vervanging van de brug is besloten.

The decision has been taken to replace the bridge.

    Noun + preposition: formal language.

Who acts if the subject is no longer there

  • van — what the action is about: de controle van de administratie — the audit of the accounts.
  • door — who performs the action: de controle door de accountant — the audit by the accountant.
  • Both parts at once: de controle van de administratie door de accountant.
  • If the agent is unimportant, they are simply not mentioned — this is half the point of nominal style.

✕ Not like this

✓ Correct

Het aanvragen van een vergunning duurt lang.

Why: Here you need the infinitive with het, not the plural of the noun.

✕ Not like this

Na het lezen het rapport belde hij.

✓ Correct

Na het lezen van het rapport belde hij.

After reading the report, he called.

Why: The same van, even within a prepositional phrase.

When nominal style is detrimental

When to use which style
SituationStyle
Letter to the gemeente, official requestnominal: verzoek tot uitstel van betaling (“request for deferral of payment”)
Memo, reportmixed: nominal headings, verbal text
Letter to a colleague, email to a clientverbal: ik wil graag later betalen (“I would like to pay later”)
Spoken languagealmost always verbal

The NT2 programme II exam tests both aspects: understanding nominal text and rephrasing it in natural language.
