Voorwaardelijke zinnen

Conditional clauses: als, mocht, tenzij, mits

B1 · Intermediate · ≈ 25 min

A condition can have different strengths. “If it rains” is a normal als. “If something should happen” is a cautious mocht. “Unless you refuse” is tenzij. And in contracts and letters, we find mits — “provided that”. The difference is not stylistic: it changes the meaning.

1. Overview

Voorwaarden

  • Woord

    mocht

    Meaning

  • Woord

    tenzij

    Meaning

    Register

    neutral

  • Woord

    mits

    Meaning

    Meaning

    Register

    officialese

    Voorbeeld

tenzij and mits are mirror images: mits u betaalt = “provided you pay”, tenzij u betaalt = “unless you pay”. Confusing them in a contract is an expensive mistake.

2. Real condition with als

A normal condition about the future is put in the present tense — just like after zodra: Als het morgen regent, blijf ik thuis. No zullen in the subordinate clause.

Two parts of a condition
  • Als het regent, neem ik de bus.

If it rains, I’ll take the bus.

    VoorwaardeAls het regent,
    Gevolgneem ik de bus.
  • Als u er niet uitkomt, belt u ons even.

If you can't work it out, give us a call.

    VoorwaardeAls u er niet uitkomt,
    Gevolgbelt u ons even.
  • Als je wilt, kan ik meerijden.

If you like, I can come along in the car.

    VoorwaardeAls je wilt,
    Gevolgkan ik meerijden.

The parts can be swapped: Ik neem de bus als het regent. Then there is no inversion in the main clause, and the verb of the subordinate clause is still at the end.

3. mocht: cautious condition

mocht sounds polite and at the same time reduces the probability: the speaker doesn’t expect it to happen. That’s why it’s so common in business letters and instructions — and almost never used in everyday conversation.

4. tenzij and mits

  • We gaan zaterdag fietsen, tenzij het stortregent.

We'll go cycling on Saturday, unless it pours with rain.

    tenzij = als … niet.

  • De afspraak blijft staan, tenzij u iets anders hoort.

The appointment stands unless you hear otherwise.

  • U krijgt tien procent korting, mits u vooraf betaalt.

You will receive a 10% discount provided you pay in advance.

  • Honden zijn welkom, mits ze aangelijnd zijn.

Dogs are allowed provided they are on a lead.

Alright. If it doesn't work out, shall we move it to Friday?

    doorgaan — “to take place”.

That's possible, provided you're at home. Otherwise I'll have come for nothing.

I'll be there. Should something come up after all, I'll call you straight away.

5. Common mistakes

✕ Not like this

Als het morgen zal regenen, blijf ik thuis.

✓ Correct

Als het morgen regent, blijf ik thuis.

If it rains tomorrow, I'll stay at home.

Why: In a conditional subordinate clause, the future is expressed with the present tense.

✕ Not like this

Als mocht u vragen hebben, bel ons.

✓ Correct

Mocht u vragen hebben, bel ons.

Should you have any questions, please call us.

Why: mocht already takes the place of the conjunction; als is redundant.

✕ Not like this

We gaan fietsen, tenzij het niet regent.

✓ Correct

We gaan fietsen, tenzij het regent.

We're going cycling, unless it rains.

Why: The negation is already contained in tenzij.

✕ Not like this

U krijgt korting, tenzij u vooraf betaalt.

✓ Correct

U krijgt korting, mits u vooraf betaalt.

You get a discount provided you pay in advance.

Why: tenzij means “unless”: it would mean everyone gets a discount except those who pay in advance. “Provided that” is mits.

✕ Not like this

Als je wilt, ik kan meerijden.

✓ Correct

Als je wilt, kan ik meerijden.

If you like, I can come along.

Why: After a subordinate clause, the main clause has inversion.
