Zou + infinitief: beleefdheid en irrealis

zou: politeness, hypothesis, unfulfilled events

B1 · Intermediate · ≈ 26 min

zou is the past tense form of zullen, but it rarely refers to the past. It's the main tool for politeness and supposition: Zou u dat kunnen herhalen? And at the same time, it's a way to talk about unreal situations: Als ik meer tijd had, zou ik het zelf doen.

1. Three jobs for one form

Wat zou doet
FunctionVoorbeeldHow it sounds in English
PolitenessZou u de deur open willen doen?Would you mind opening the door?
Softened opinionIk zou zeggen: doe het morgen.I would say: do it tomorrow.
HypothesisDat zou kunnen. That might be possible.
If I were rich, I wouldn't work.
I would have arrived earlier, but the train was cancelled.
HearsayHij zou ziek zijn.He is said to be ill / They say he is ill.

The last row is a journalistic use: zou indicates that the information is unverified. It's often found in news reports: De schade zou groot zijn.

2. Politeness: the main application

A direct request in Dutch isn't rude, but with zou it sounds noticeably softer. This is how people speak in the gemeente (municipality), in banks, and on the phone with strangers.

From direct to polite
DirectSofterVery polite
Help me even.Kun je me even helpen?Zou je me even kunnen helpen?
Ik wil een afspraak.Ik wil graag een afspraak maken.Ik zou graag een afspraak willen maken.
Herhaal dat.Kunt u dat herhalen?Zou u dat kunnen herhalen?
Dat wil ik niet.Dat wil ik liever niet.Dat zou ik liever niet doen.
Doe het morgen.Doe het maar morgen.Ik zou het morgen doen.

Note: with zou, a second modal verb almost always appears — kunnen or willen. Zou u kunnen … and Ik zou graag willen … are two ready-made formulas that cover most situations.

Ready-made formulas

Would you be so kind as to enclose the form?

Very formal — appropriate in a letter, not in conversation.

I would like to make an appointment for next week.

Could something have gone wrong with the payment?

    I would say it's better to double-check.

Softening advice: not “do it”, but “I would…”.

  • Dat zou fijn zijn, dank je wel.

That would be great, thank you.

3. Unreal situations: present and past

Two parts of an unreal condition

If I had more time, I would do it myself.

If it wasn't so expensive, we would buy it immediately.

If I had known, I would have come earlier.

Condition (als …)Als ik dat had geweten,
    Consequencezou ik eerder zijn gekomen.

The als clause most naturally takes the imperfect (for the present) or the past perfect (for the past). Als ik meer tijd zou hebben is also possible but sounds heavier — and then zou goes to the end, like any verb in a subordinate clause. The mistake Als ik zou meer tijd hebben is the most common one with this topic.
