Tegenstelling en toegeving
Concession and contrast: hoewel, toch, echter
B1 · Intermediate · ≈ 25 min · setting: Tilburg, Eindhoven, het dorp
Concession is acknowledging “yes, but”: Hoewel het regende, zijn we toch gegaan. Without these conjunctions, speech at B1 sounds like a list of facts. They add the speaker's perspective — and that's what's tested in the oral and written parts of the exam.

2. hoewel: the main concession conjunction
Hoewel het hard regende, zijn we toch gegaan.
Although it rained heavily, we still went.

toch almost always appears in the main clause — it emphasises the concession. It's not mandatory, but it sounds more natural.
3. Adverbs: toch, echter, daarentegen
Het was koud. We hebben toch buiten gezeten.
It was cold. We sat outside anyway.
toch in the middle of the sentence is the most common position.
De cursus is vol. Er is echter een wachtlijst.
The course is full. However, there is a waiting list.
echter is a written word; in speech it sounds like “however” in a report.
Tilburg is rustig. Eindhoven is daarentegen een stuk drukker.
Tilburg is quiet. Eindhoven, on the other hand, is much livelier.
Ik had weinig tijd. Niettemin heb ik het afgemaakt.
I had little time. Nevertheless, I finished it.
Formal; in conversation, toch is more common.
Het is duur, maar het werkt wel goed.
It's expensive, but it does work well.
wel stresses the positive side, like “does” in “but it does work well”.
Toch has a special feature: at the beginning of a sentence, it means an objection (“and yet”), and in the middle, it means “anyway” or “still”. Toch vind ik het te duur — and yet I find it too expensive versus Ik vind het toch te duur — I still find it too expensive.
