Oorzaak en gevolg uitdrukken

Cause and effect: omdat, doordat, daardoor, dus

B1 · Intermediate · ≈ 27 min

The difference between A2 and B1 is not in vocabulary, but in the ability to connect thoughts. Here you'll find all the ways to express cause and effect: omdat, doordat, aangezien, want — and the reverse: daarom, daardoor, dus, zodat. Each requires its own word order, and this is often where learners struggle in exams.

want and omdat mean the same thing, but want does not send the verb to the end: …, want de trein valt uit versus …, omdat de trein uitvalt.

2. omdat or doordat

Both translate as “because”, but doordat indicates a cause that has no agent: weather, a breakdown, circumstances. omdat works in all cases, including for motives and decisions. If there is someone's will involved in the cause — only omdat.

Difference with examples
ZinWhy it's like that
Doordat de trein uitviel, kwam ik te laat.the train was cancelled — circumstances, no one is personally to blame

Practical advice: if in doubt, use omdat. It will almost never be wrong. Use doordat consciously when you want to emphasise “it just happened that way”.

3. Consequence: daarom, daardoor, dus

Adverb in the first position → inversion
  • Daarom nam ik de bus.

    So I took the bus.

    1. AdverbDaarom
    2. Verbnam
    3. Subject and the restik de bus.
  • Daardoor kwam ik te laat.

Because of that, I was late.

    1. AdverbDaardoor
    2. Verbkwam
    3. Subject and the restik te laat.
  • Dus bleef ik thuis.

    So I stayed home.

    1. AdverbDus
    2. Verbbleef
    3. Subject and the restik thuis.

daarom — “that’s why I decided”: it implies a personal choice. daardoor — “that’s why it happened”: a result without anyone's decision.

One situation — four ways to tell it

The train was cancelled, so I took the bus.

    The most conversational option.

I took the bus because the train was cancelled.

    Neutral, verb at the end.

Due to the train cancellation, I was half an hour late.

    Emphasis on an external cause.

The train was cancelled; that's why I took the bus.

    After daarom — inversion.

Since the train was cancelled, I took a taxi.

    Formal, for writing.

4. zodat: in order to and as a result

Dialoog — Waarom de aanvraag is afgewezen

A call to the insurance company after a rejection.

  1. Medewerker

Your claim has been rejected because the procedure is not included in the basic package.

  2. Alex

But my GP referred me. So I thought it would be covered.

After daarom — inversion: dacht ik.

  3. Medewerker

A referral is needed, but it's not enough. Because the code on the invoice is different, it's not covered.

    doordat — a cause beyond anyone's will.

  4. Alex

So if the code is corrected, then it will be covered?

  5. Medewerker

Klopt.

Correct. Please ask the clinic for a new invoice so we can review it again.

  6. Alex

Helder.

I see. Since I've already paid the amount, will I get it back?

  7. Medewerker

Ja, want de vergoeding loopt via ons. Daardoor duurt het wel drie weken.

Yes, because reimbursement goes through us. Because of that, it will take about three weeks.
