Indirecte rede: dat, of en de verschuiving

Reported speech: reporting what someone else said

B1 · Intermediate · ≈ 27 min

Reporting what someone else said is something we do all the time, both at work and at home: Ze zei dat …, Hij vroeg of …. Three things change: the conjunction, the pronouns and — sometimes — the verb tense. Plus the verb moves to the end, because it's a subordinate clause.

1. Which conjunction

Directe rede → indirecte rede
Direct speechTypeReported speech
«Ik kom morgen.»statementHij zei dat hij morgen kwam.
«Heb je tijd?»yes/no questionZe vroeg of ik tijd had.
«Waar woon je?»question with interrogative wordHij vroeg waar ik woonde.
«Bel me even.»requestZe vroeg of ik haar wilde bellen.
«Doe de deur dicht!»commandHij zei dat ik de deur dicht moest doen.

For requests and commands, a construction with moeten or willen is used: there is no direct equivalent of the imperative in reported speech.

2. What changes along with the conjunction

Shift in pronouns and time
Directe redeWhat changesIndirecte rede
«Ik ben moe.»personHij zei dat hij moe was.
«Mijn fiets is stuk.»possessiveZe zei dat haar fiets stuk was.
«Ik kom morgen.»time indicatorHij zei dat hij de volgende dag zou komen.
«Ik was gisteren ziek.»sameZe zei dat ze de dag ervoor ziek was geweest.
«Ik werk hier.»placeHij zei dat hij daar werkte.

morgen → de volgende dag, gisteren → de dag ervoor, vandaag → die dag. If the reporting happens on the same day, no change is needed: Hij zei dat hij morgen komt is also correct.

3. Verb tense

There is no strict rule for sequence of tenses in Dutch, as there is in English. Both options work, and both are commonly used.

Two ways to report the same thing
  • Hij zei dat hij morgen komt.

He said he's coming tomorrow. (still relevant now)

    Introductory clauseHij zei
    Subordinate clausedat hij morgen komt.
  • Hij zei dat hij de volgende dag zou komen.

He said he would come the next day. (telling a story about the past)

    Introductory clauseHij zei
Subordinate clausedat hij de volgende dag zou komen.
  • Ze vroeg of ik tijd had.

She asked if I had time.

    Introductory clauseZe vroeg
    Subordinate clauseof ik tijd had.

The present tense is kept when what was said is still true. It is shifted to the past tense or zou + infinitive when telling a story.

How it sounds in real life

  • De huisarts zei dat de uitslag volgende week binnen is.

The doctor said the result would come next week.

Present tense: the information is still relevant.

  • Ze vroeg of we zaterdag kunnen.

She asked if we could make it on Saturday.

  • Hij vroeg hoe laat de vergadering begon.

He asked what time the meeting started.

  • De gemeente liet weten dat de aanvraag was afgewezen.

The municipality announced that the application had been rejected.

  • Mijn buurman zei dat ik de container buiten moest zetten.

My neighbour said I needed to put out the bin.
