Er in alle functies — gevorderd
er: all functions and their combinations
B1 · Intermediate · ≈ 30 min · setting: Haarlem, Amsterdam
At A2, we looked at four functions of er. At B1, a fifth is added — er + numeral — and the main difficulty arises: what to do when two functions are needed in one sentence. The answer is simple: er is written once, even if it does the work of two.
1. Full table
Function
plaats — place
Voorbeeld
Ik ben er gisteren geweest.
What it replaces
daar / in that place
Function
voorlopig onderwerp — introductory
Voorbeeld
Er ligt een pakketje in de gang.
What it replaces
nothing, just “there is/are”
Function
voorzetselvoorwerp — with a preposition
Voorbeeld
Ik kijk ernaar uit.
What it replaces
the object after the preposition
Function
hoeveelheid — quantity
Voorbeeld
Hoeveel wil je? — Ik neem er twee.
What it replaces
a noun with a number
Function
passief zonder onderwerp
Voorbeeld
Er wordt hard gewerkt.
What it replaces
nothing, impersonality
| Function | Voorbeeld | What it replaces |
|---|---|---|
| plaats — place | Ik ben er gisteren geweest. | daar / in that place |
| voorlopig onderwerp — introductory | Er ligt een pakketje in de gang. | nothing, just “there is/are” |
| voorzetselvoorwerp — with a preposition | Ik kijk ernaar uit. | the object after the preposition |
| hoeveelheid — quantity | Hoeveel wil je? — Ik neem er twee. | a noun with a number |
| passief zonder onderwerp | Er wordt hard gewerkt. | nothing, impersonality |
Functions 3 and 4 are obligatory: without er, the sentence will be incorrect. Function 1 can sometimes be replaced by daar if you want to emphasise the place.
2. er + numeral
This is a new function for B1 and one of the most common in shops and in conversation. If the noun has already been mentioned, it is not repeated with the numeral, but er must be used.
— Hoeveel broodjes wil je? — Doe er maar twee.
— How many buns? — I'll have two.
— Heb je kinderen? — Ja, ik heb er twee.
— Do you have children? — Yes, two.
Er staan zes stoelen; we hebben er maar vier nodig.
There are six chairs; we only need four.
— Zijn er nog kaartjes? — Ja, er zijn er nog drie.
— Are there any tickets left? — Yes, three more.
Here there are two er's in a row: the first is introductory, the second is with the numeral. This is correct.
3. When there are multiple functions
| Situation | Zin | What er does |
|---|---|---|
| introductory + quantity | Er liggen er nog vier in de kast. | the first is introductory, the second is with the number |
| introductory + passive | Er wordt veel over gepraat. | one er for both functions |
| place + preposition | Ik ben er nooit geweest en denk er ook niet aan. | two different sentences |
| preposition + quantity | Ik heb er twee van gekocht. | one er, preposition van at the end |
General rule: two er's are not used consecutively if one can suffice. The exception is the pair “introductory + numeral”, where both are indeed needed.
4. Where er goes

There is a parcel in the hallway.

If the sentence doesn't start with er, it moves to the position immediately after the verb and subject. The preposition remains at the end: er … aan, er … over, er … van.
