“This house” and “this street” look different in Dutch: dit huis, but deze straat. The word's article – whether it's de or het – determines everything. There's also the pair die / dat for things further away, and for introducing people.
| dichtbij — this | verder weg — that | |
|---|---|---|
| de-woord (de fiets) | deze fiets | die fiets |
| het-woord (het huis) | dit huis | dat huis |

This is why you should learn the article together with the noun: deze/dit, ons/onze, and the adjective ending all depend on it.
1. Before a noun
Deze bus gaat naar Amsterdam, die bus gaat naar Haarlem.
This bus goes to Amsterdam, and that one goes to Haarlem.
de bus → deze / die.
Dit formulier moet u invullen, dat formulier niet.
This form needs to be filled in, but that one doesn't.
het formulier → dit / dat.

These children live on our street.
Plural is always deze/die.
Hoeveel kost dat kaasje daar?
How much is that little cheese over there?
2. Without a noun — stand-alone
Die and dat often stand on their own – then they mean “this, that, he, she, it”. This is very common in spoken Dutch.
— Wie is die man daar? — Dat is onze buurman Thijs.
— Who is that man over there? — That's our neighbour Thijs.
When introducing someone, you always say dat is / dit is, regardless of gender.
Dit is mijn vrouw Nora.
This is my wife Nora.
Introductions: dit is + name.
— Welke fiets is van jou? — Die met het zwarte zadel.
— Which bicycle is yours? — That one, with the black saddle.
Dat klopt.
That's right, that's how it is.
A ready-made phrase for confirmation.

Heard ten times a day at work.
3. Demonstratives + adjective
