Zorg als professional

Medical Dutch: anamnese, overdracht, triage

C1 · Advanced · ≈ 27 min

Many newcomers to the Netherlands work in zorg: in hospitals, nursing homes, or home care. A B2 level gives you the language of a patient; this lesson provides the language of a colleague. During an overdracht, people speak quickly and follow a protocol; in a dossier, they write concisely. Words like beleid and benauwd mean something different in a hospital ward than they do in the news. This lesson is for those who work in healthcare or plan to.

Anouk works as a nurse on the internal medicine ward. At seven in the morning she does the handover to the day shift, using SBAR.

'Mr De Wit, room 4,' she begins. 'He was admitted yesterday; I took his history. Medical history: heart failure and diabetes. Last night he was short of breath and his saturation dropped to 89 per cent.'

'The working diagnosis is pneumonia; a pulmonary embolism hasn't been ruled out yet. The plan: antibiotics through the drip. I gave the first dose at four o'clock.'

'He's a bit drowsy, so the fall risk is high. Watch out for pressure sores on his heels too. If he deteriorates further, call the doctor. But I think he'll pick up quickly.' Everything is in the record too: she has reported it accurately.
