Academic Dutch: onderzoeksvraag, steekproef, bevinding

C1 · Advanced · ≈ 26 min

Anyone studying at a Dutch university, writing a scriptie (thesis), or simply reading popular science articles in NRC and de Volkskrant, will encounter the same set of words: onderzoeksvraag, steekproef, significant, bevinding, beperking. Most are similar to English, but with pitfalls: significant here doesn't mean “large”, discussie is not a dispute, and betrouwbaar and valide are not synonyms. This lesson collects these words as they appear throughout a research process — from question to conclusions.

Next year Thijs will defend his PhD on working from home. His research question is: does working from home make people more productive? He has split it into three sub-questions.

His hypothesis was that home workers get more done. To test it, he ran a survey among 1,200 respondents. The sample was representative of the Dutch working population.

The main finding: home workers report considerably higher productivity, and the difference is significant. But he can't demonstrate a causal relationship: perhaps it's precisely the most productive people who work from home more often.

His supervisor points out another limitation: it's self-reporting, and that measuring instrument isn't very reliable. He removed one outlier, someone who claimed to work ninety hours a week, from the data. In the discussion he can at most make the effect plausible.

A Dutch scriptie (thesis) is almost always structured around a hoofdvraag (main question) and deelvragen (sub-questions): the supervisor's first question will be Wat is je onderzoeksvraag? If the question doesn't fit into a single sentence, it hasn't been formulated yet.

People and procedures

  • de begeleider — the supervisor of a scriptie; for a dissertation, it's de promotor.
  • het proefschrift — dissertation; promoveren — to defend it and obtain a doctorate; the person writing it is de promovendus.
  • de bronvermelding — references to sources; without it, the text is considered plagiaat.
  • peer review / de collegiale toetsing — the review of an article by other academics before publication.

How it sounds in an article

  • De hoofdvraag luidt: in hoeverre beïnvloedt thuiswerken de werktevredenheid?

The main question is: to what extent does working from home affect job satisfaction?

The survey was conducted among a random sample of 1,200 respondents.

  • Het verschil is significant, maar klein.

The difference is significant, but small.

A limitation of this study is that the sample is not representative.

These results make a causal link plausible, but do not prove it.

Gesprek — Bij de begeleider

Mila shows her supervisor the plan for her scriptie.

  1. Joost

    Wat is precies je onderzoeksvraag?

What exactly is your research question?

  2. Mila

Of taalcafés nieuwkomers helpen sneller werk te vinden.

Whether language cafés help newcomers find work faster.

  3. Joost

Mooi. En hoe groot wordt je steekproef?

Nice. And how big will your sample be?

  4. Mila

Veertig respondenten, via drie taalcafés in de regio.

Forty respondents, from three language cafés in the region.

  5. Joost

Dan is hij niet representatief. Noem dat in je discussie als beperking.

Then it isn't representative. Mention that in your discussion as a limitation.

  6. Mila

En als ik een verband vind?

And what if I find a link?

  7. Joost

Then you write that it's a link, not proof of cause.
