Werkwoorden met een dubbele betekenis

One verb — two meanings: dóórlopen and doorlópen

C1 · Advanced · ≈ 24 min

De zon gaat onder — the sun sets. Hij heeft een operatie ondergaan — he underwent an operation. It's the same verb, but in the first case the stress is on the prefix (óndergaan), and it's separable, while in the second case it's on the root (ondergáán), and the verb behaves as inseparable. At B1 you saw vóórkomen / voorkómen; there are dozens of such pairs, and in serious texts, it's the “inseparable” meanings that appear. This lesson teaches you to recognise them by their form, even when the stress isn't visible.

Six common pairs

Stress on prefix vs. stress on root
Separable: stress on prefixInseparable: stress on rootPerfect tense
dóórlopen — to keep walkingdoorlópen — to go through (a course, a procedure)is doorgelopen / heeft doorlopen

Accent marks (dóórlopen, doorlópen) are only written when the phrase would otherwise be ambiguous. Usually they are absent — the form and context indicate the meaning.

How to tell without accent marks

  • If the prefix has separated and is at the end — it's the separable meaning: De zon gaat om negen uur onder.
  • If the past participle has ge- inside — it's separable: doorgelopen, ondergegaan. Without ge- — it's inseparable: doorlopen, ondergaan.
  • If te is inside — it's separable: door te lopen. If te is before the verb — it's inseparable: te doorlopen.
  • Inseparable verbs usually have a direct object: een procedure doorlopen, een operatie ondergaan, een ramp voorkomen.
