Alex and Nora got a tailored energy report for their house. The energy label is D. The advice: first cavity wall insulation and floor insulation, and only then a heat pump.

They get a thirty per cent subsidy for the insulation. The payback period is about six years. 'That's not bad,' says Nora.

They already have solar panels. In the summer a lot of electricity goes back to the grid. They can still offset that feed-in against what they use in winter, but the scheme is ending soon.

Then the annual statement arrives. Their monthly advance payment was too high: they get 240 euros back. Still, the bill remains hefty because of the standing charge and the energy tax. But their house's emissions are a third lower than two years ago.
