Almost everything in the Netherlands is done online: taxes, doctors, the municipality. This means you'll receive letters about a datalek, pop-ups about cookies, and news debates about algoritmes when benefits are issued. These words aren't just for IT specialists; they're essential for understanding what you're signing and agreeing to.

One Monday Nora gets an email from the gym: there has been a data breach. Hackers have stolen the personal data of thousands of members: names, addresses and login details.

Nora immediately changes her password and turns on two-step verification. Then she reads the privacy statement. It says the gym may process her data for marketing. She never gave consent for that, or so she thought.

Under the GDPR (AVG) she has the right of access: she may ask what data the gym keeps about her. She sends a request and immediately withdraws her consent for marketing.

At work they talk about it. 'The government also uses an algorithm to detect fraud,' says a colleague. 'It has to be transparent, otherwise nobody knows why they're being checked. And data for research has to be anonymised first.'
