Karakter en samenwerking

Character and teamwork

B2 · Upper intermediate · ≈ 25 min

These words are needed in two places: at a job interview (“wat is je valkuil?”) and at an annual review with your manager. A Dutch peculiarity is that weaknesses are discussed directly, and the same is expected of you — an evasive answer is seen as worse than an acknowledged flaw.

Two characters, one team

Anouk works in Alex's team: accurate, analytical and very committed. Her pitfall: she wants everything to be perfect, and so she sometimes finishes late.

Bas is the opposite: decisive and flexible, but sometimes sloppy. In meetings they clash regularly.

Alex decides to raise it with their manager. She organises a conversation. They learn to give each other feedback: first a compliment, then the point. Anouk speaks her mind: 'I feel my work isn't seen.'

After that things improve. Bas shows more appreciation for Anouk's precision, and Anouk learns to set boundaries and choose priorities. In the performance review their manager calls them 'the most collegial duo in the department'.

Conflict without argument

Phrases that relieve tension

I notice this makes me uncomfortable. Can we talk about it for a moment?

Focus on yourself, not the other person – a basic rule.

I think we're aiming for the same goal, but taking a different route.

What do you need from me to get this done on time?

I'm not saying this as criticism, but because I like things to be clear.

Gesprek — Functioneringsgesprek

Performance review: Hanneke and Karim.

  1. Hanneketeamleider

What do you feel went well this year?

  2. Karim

I've become more independent, and I dare to raise issues sooner.

  3. Hanneketeamleider

Dat merk ik ook. En waar loop je tegenaan?

I've noticed that too. And where do you run into difficulties?

  4. Karim

My pitfall is that I find it hard to say no. Because of that, my workload increases.

  5. Hanneketeamleider

What do you need from me to change that?

  6. Karim

Duidelijker prioriteiten.

Clearer priorities. If everything is urgent, I can't decline anything.

  7. Hanneketeamleider

Terecht. Laten we maandelijks de lijst samen doornemen.

Fair enough. Let's go through the list together every month.

  8. Karim

Graag.

Gladly. And next year I want to take a project management course.
