The education system is something you have to figure out for both children and yourself: basisschool, vmbo, havo, vwo, then mbo, hbo, wo. Plus a separate track for adults: inburgering, staatsexamen NT2, diplomawaardering — diploma recognition.

Anouk, a colleague of Nora's, is from Portugal. She worked there as a nurse. First she had her diploma assessed: according to the diploma evaluation it's equivalent to MBO level 4. With that she can move on to higher professional education.

She looked at the entry requirements for the nursing programme. She had to do an intake there: an interview and a language test. After that she could enrol for September.

The first year was hard. Every week she had to hand in assignments. She passed her first exam straight away, but she failed anatomy. Luckily there was a resit, and then she got a good mark: an eight.

Now she's doing a work placement at the hospital in Arnhem. Her supervisor says: 'Later on you can specialise further, with extra training.'

Stapelen is an important word: the path upwards is not closed. You can go from mbo to hbo, and from there to university. It takes more years, but it works, and the Dutch are proud of it.

Staatsexamen NT2 programme I corresponds to level B1 and grants access to mbo and most jobs. Programme II is B2, required for hbo and university.

Grades in the Netherlands are on a ten-point scale; the passing grade is 5.5. A grade of 8 is considered very good, and a 10 is almost never given: as the old school saying goes: een tien is voor God, een negen voor de leraar.
