1. A performance review

After a year Alex had his first performance review with his manager. They talked about the workload: in the spring it was very busy. 'Are you managing?' she asked. 'It's OK, but sometimes it's a lot.'

Then came the good news: his probation period was long over and he was getting a permanent contract. She also mentioned an internal vacancy: team leader. That way he could move up. 'That appeals to me,' said Alex, 'but I want to talk it over with Nora first.'

At home they looked at the new terms of employment. His gross salary goes up, and in May he gets holiday pay: eight per cent. On his payslip he'll see exactly what's left net.

'Is it doable, being team leader and taking Mila to school?' asked Nora. 'I think so.' Alex emailed his manager that he would reply by Friday at the latest.

marktconform — market-rate means “what is customary to pay for such a job”. If the advertisement says salaris in overleg — salary negotiable, they expect you to state a figure.

When talking about a weakness, don't say “I'm a perfectionist” — everyone has heard that. Specificity works: Ik ben soms te direct in de mail; daar let ik nu bewust op.

Vakantiegeld is not a gift, but a legally mandated 8% of your annual salary, paid as a lump sum in May. Many people plan their holidays with this money, hence the name.
