Milieu en duurzaamheid

Rubbish, energy and home

B1 · Intermediate · ≈ 25 min

A topic that comes up in the Netherlands in letters from the gemeente and in conversations over the fence: afval scheiden — to separate waste, isoleren — to insulate, warmtepomp, zonnepanelen, subsidie. Here you'll find everyday vocabulary and words for discussion.

Since they've lived in their new house, Alex and Nora separate their waste better. Peelings and food scraps go in the organic waste bin, plastic and cans in the PMD bin. Mila takes the empty bottles back to the supermarket for the deposit.

An old cupboard won't fit in the bin. They take it to the recycling centre, or have the bulky waste collected by the municipality. Things that are still good go to the second-hand shop.

Last year the energy bill was very high. So they're having the attic insulated and solar panels put on the roof. They get a subsidy from the municipality for that.

A heat pump is still too expensive, but they do want to save. Every month Alex writes down the meter reading. Consumption is already twenty per cent lower. 'Good for the climate and for our wallet,' says Nora.

Statiegeld is now also on small bottles and cans: 15 cents for a can or small bottle, 25 for a large bottle. They are returned to a machine (de statiegeldautomaat) in the supermarket — the receipt can be cashed or used towards a purchase.

You constantly hear the phrase: isoleren is de goedkoopste energie — the cheapest energy is the energy you don't use. That's where you start, and you install a heat pump later.

Dialoog — Over de energierekening

A conversation with a neighbour about insulating the house.

  1. Thijs

Wij hebben vorige maand zonnepanelen laten leggen.

We had solar panels installed last month.

  2. Alex

Is it already noticeable on the bill?

  3. Thijs

Not much yet, but consumption is visible in the app. Have you insulated already?

  4. Alex

Only the roof. Not the walls yet — that's a serious investment.

  5. Thijs

Apply for a subsidy. The municipality covers part of it, and there's also a national scheme.

  6. Alex

Goede tip. En hoe zit het met een warmtepomp?

Good advice. What about a heat pump?

  7. Thijs

Eerst isoleren, dan pas een pomp. Anders werkt hij niet efficiënt.

Insulation first, then the pump. Otherwise, it's inefficient.

  8. Alex

Duidelijk. En het grofvuil van de verbouwing?

Clear. And the bulky waste from the renovation?

  9. Thijs

Take it to the recycling centre yourself. They can also pick it up, but then you need an appointment.
